Duck Herding for outdoor team building

Duck Herding is an unusual team building activity for corporate team building programmes and other event

After having been introduced to the dog, shown how to use the whistle and been given a short demonstration in duck-herding techniques from the expert handler, it is time for the delegates to take the shepherd's crook. It soon becomes apparent that it takes considerable skill to control the dog and the ducks.

Using four verbal commands: By (clockwise), Away (anticlockwise), Stand (stop) and Walk (walk forward) the delegates will be taught to how to control a well-trained border collie. The dog will then guide the ducks around the obstacle course. Duck herding is a great leveller as the team members have to communicate and use their initiative. The upright "walking wine bottle-like" stance of the Indian runners, as they hurtle through tunnels and down slides in a closely-knit group, is a spectacle. Once the delegates have got one Indian runner through an obstacle the rest usually follow, but sometimes one will play up, adding to the comedy. It is the perfect antidote to office routine and delegates will find that working with a sheepdog is an experience that they remember forever.

Duck herding can be incorporated into a corporate team building event
